After using the intercoms for about 20 hours now, I have a few words of experience.First the good news: This unit works great as a bluetooth headset for your MP3 player on your smart phone. It took 3 or 4 trial and error positioning of the speakers, but once placed properly they sound very clear and are more than loud enough. The sound quality is certainly geared toward voice though so music sounds a bit thin and lacks bass. Both the sound and the microphone worked much better on my decent HJC helmet than they did on my wife's cheap helmet. We re-installed them on a new Bell helmet and she said the difference was amazing due to the reduced wind noise. Similarly, the wind noise was MUCH reduced through the mic and was much easier for me to hear. At speeds <50 MPH the intercoms were very clear and easy to hear. At 60+ the wind/bike/road noise was such that we were talking loudly and had the units turned all the way up, so we got a lot of "distortion". However, I had a "theory" on how to improve performance & improvised an "ear clip" onto each earphone/mic so that the "speaker" was held directly against our ears. I wrapped & shaped insulated single strand 12 gauge copper electrical wire (10 gauge might work better). We put them on, then wiggled our helmets on & plugged into the transmitters and voila!! Was able to turn the listening volume "down" at least 30% which boosted the clarity by about 300%!! We were speaking at a "normal tone of voice", and at levels so low we couldn't hear ourselves talking, but could hear the other person... The volume is way more then you need, sound quality is just fine. For the price, I am amazing at how well they work. My brother and I used them for a 2000 mile ride through California. They changed everything. Being able to communicate while riding was a game-changer. Increased the safety and fun. Now, they dont have the noise-cancellation quality of the $450 sets out there, but if you can get used to a bit of wind noise from your partners helmet, these are fine. Also, the 1 mile range they advertise; good luck with that. Maybe on an ocean or bay with no obstructions. We were able to have a pretty solid connection up to about a half mile. Mix in obstructions like buildings or hillsides and they can drop to as low as a few hundred yards or so. Also, the connection would sometimes drop off and they would have to be reconnected.
